The Levinsky Market or Shuk Levinski in Hebrew is one of Tel Aviv’s most beloved markets, albeit not as famous as Tel Aviv’s Carmel Market or Shuk haCarmel. Located in the Florentin Quarter of Tel Aviv, the Levinsky Market was founded in 1927 as an area for spice merchants and kitchenwares dealers to trade. The world famous Pereg spice company’s first shop is in Levinsky Market and their products are now a staple in Israeli and Jewish homes throughout the world.

Levinsky Market, just like the Florentin Quarter which it calls home, has undergone many changes throughout the decades. In the 1950’s the market began to host a number of restaurants in addition to the traders, with a focus on Greek and traditional Eastern-European Ashkenazi food. The 1990’s saw Florentin become a center for student life and the art scene, with numerous cafes and student bars opening up as well alongside the now veteran traders and home-cooking restaurants.

At the same time the neighborhood became home to a vibrant Iranian-Jewish community that arrived in the 1980’s and the Levinsky Market became home to a number of Iranian restaurants which still continue to exist today.

Today the Levinsky Market has completely changed. Recently the main street was pedestrianized which gives it a similar vibe to the Carmel Market and has attracted many types of eateries, cafes, and bars. Today, we’ll take you a little tour.

A true Tel Aviv institution, Bourekas Penso has been serving some of the city’s best bourekas for half a century. They even sell some frozen ones for you to take back home!

A touch of Vietnam in Tel Aviv! Serving the famous Banh Mi sandwich, which is a baguette stuffed with fresh veggies and meat or tofu. They also have a nice back garden which is a great spot to relax outside the buzz of the Levinsky Market.

Sabich Frishman

Levinsky Market Branch – Levinski 57

Serving up the best sabich in the city, this is the local branch of the famous sabich store on Frishman Street in Tel Aviv’s City Centre. Sabich is a traditional Iraqi-Jewish dish consisting of fried eggplant, hard-boiled egg, salad, hummus, and mango chutney in a fresh baked pita. While it may not sound like much, sabich is truly an other-world thing to taste while in Israel!

Khachapuri haAchot

The “Sisters” (the Achot in the name of the restaurant) serve up some of the best Georgian (the country, not the US state!) food in Israel. Khachapuri is a traditional dish of cheese filled bread. Sounds simple, but it isn’t. It requires years of painstaking learning to get this dish right and there are a number of variations, all of which the Sisters do up well here.

Sender has been serving up traditional Ashkenazi Eastern-European Jewish cuisine in this very spot since 1948. Cholent, Schnitzel, Stuffed Derma, Kishke, and Kneidelech all are served prominently in this family-run (third generation) eatery. Every who’s who of Israeli society has eaten here at some point and photos are all over the place showing off the history of this storied Tel Aviv establishment. If you’re looking for a Tel Aviv restaurant serving up authentic Ashkenazi food, Sender is your spot.

Puni Bakery

Puni Bakery is one of Tel Aviv’s oldest bakeries still in existence, opening up in 1922, even before the Lewinsky Market opened up! Most famous for their mini-bourekas, walking into Puni Bakery is like a step back in time to an Israel that many still fondly remember. Simple, delicious, and friendly.
