It's bounded by the Carmel Market and Allenby Street to the east and north, HaYarkon Street and the beachfront to the west, and the approach to Neve Tzedek and the Charles Clore Park to the south. You can cross the whole neighborhood on foot in about ten minutes.

Inside it, the texture changes with proximity to the two anchors. The streets closest to the Carmel Market — around Malan and HaShomer — are the loudest and most commercial, with market overflow, restaurants, and the highest foot traffic. The western strip toward HaYarkon and the beach is quieter and commands a premium for sea proximity. The interior alleys — Nahaliel, Pri Megadim, Rabbi Meir — are the most village-like and the most varied in condition, where the renovation opportunities concentrate.

A short history

Kerem HaTeimanim was founded in 1906 — three years before Tel Aviv — when Yemenite Jewish immigrants settled on a vineyard ("kerem") north of Jaffa. They had begun arriving in waves from Yemen in the 1880s, and this patch of agricultural land became their quarter: a dense, self-organized neighborhood of small homes and synagogues, built fast and cheap by a community with little money but a strong communal structure.

For most of the 20th century the Kerem stayed exactly that — a poor, crowded, intensely communal Yemenite neighborhood, looked down on by the wealthier city growing around it. The Carmel Market, which grew up on its edge, gave it commercial life. The food gave it a reputation. But the housing stayed cheap and the buildings stayed old.

That began to change in the 2000s, as Tel Aviv's center filled up and buyers rediscovered the Kerem's once-in-a-city location between market and sea. Gentrification arrived — renovations, cafés, the first design-forward apartments — but more slowly and incompletely than in Neve Tzedek or Florentine. The result today is a neighborhood in genuine transition: a real Yemenite community and a growing wave of new buyers, sharing the same narrow alleys.
