4 Tel Aviv Architecture Studios You Need to Know

Tel Aviv is ever changing. Building towers are popping out all the time. On our street alone in Florentine there are two projects growing out of the ground. With the real estate boom that we are experiencing, architects came under high demand. We’ve witnessed a new crop of architects emerge. Away from the now established and highly praised Pitsou KedemIlan Pivko and Asaf Lerman, these architects come with a more intimate and tailored approach to design, one that is sensitive to the environmental and social impact of their creations and most importantly that is inclusive rather than exclusive. Here are four of our ultimate favorite architects in Israel today. We love them because we’ve either worked with them or met them personally and frankly one of the main pain points when working on a construction or a renovation is not be heard or understood by the architect. Like a family doctor, a family architect is someone who empathizes with your concerns, your aspirations and finds a way to adapt their tastes and principles to yours.

Levi Oren Architects

The Tel-aviv based practice specializes in architecture, planning and interior design for industrial, residential and commercial projects.Their work entails attention to details, from concept to execution and creative approach that produces timeless results. Having lived and studied in Paris, Oren was influenced by the esthetics of the French capital. A fluent French speaker and an insatiable art fan, Oren’s work is clearly infused with the tasteful boldness so typical of Parisian contemporary architecture. Levi and Oren both aspire for the architectural holy graal, timelessness. Through the use of Bauhaus functionality principles coupled with bold contemporary features and even Botta inspired manipulations, Levi and Oren manage to create spaces and structures that inspire both confort and playfulness.

Their approach is what we’d qualify as anti-bling, or the opposite of “show-room” style homes. Instead they induce luxury through their elaborate juxtapositions of textures, light and color.

Each one of their project is a highly intimate process where no detail is ignored and the results are stunning.

RUST is a young Tel-Aviv based design studio, developing architectural and interior projects in a wide range of environments ranging from small to large scale that engage in issues of creativity and knowledge, realism and imagination, function and culture. RUST best embodies the Tel Aviv way of life. Bold, fun and intimate, their designs reflect the energy of the city. Small buildings, adaptations of Bauhaus architecture with splashes of industrial chic and campy hot pink tiles are a playful take on the vibe of the city.  An architecture studio that feels more like a gaming start-up RUST architect do not impose architectural dogmas; they bend them instead.  Each project is a new and exciting challenge. The challenge lies in finding the most creative solutions for the various systems, applications, and of course the comfortable appearance and customized detailing.

SHAGA ARCHITECTS is an architecture, planning and computation practice based in Tel-Aviv. The studio brings together a well-rounded set of expertise, combining cutting edge international experience with a meticulous care for details and construction both locally and internationally. The Partners Gary Freedman, Shany Barath, and Liat Muller were educated at Yale University in the US, AA/Architectural Association in London and TUDelft in the Netherlands. The three talented architects each bring a set of skills and experiences that complement each other. With a pulse on the current international architectural scene, Shaga Architects are at the forefront of architectural innovation and are not shy to adopt new technologies and concepts in their designs across scales (interior, architectural, urban). Their approach, built on their strong academic and conceptual groundings, is to tackle design challenges in an inclusive an sensitive manner. Having closely worked with one of the most revered architect, Zaha Hadid, Liat Muller, co-founded the studio on the principle that architectural designs were not intended as a personal stamp on the world, or an act of self-indulgence, but rather, as a way to address 21st-century challenges and opportunities. Shaga develops their own computational tools for design as well as deploying state of the art BIM methodologies on various projects and scales. Each project’ s feasibility is carefully assessed according to financial, social, and environmental constraints. Architecture, even at the lowest scale, is meant to add to society’s advancement and the inclusion of everyone in its quest for prosperity. Shaga’s designs exude the kind of academic, experimental esthetics in a kind of subdued and reassuringly modest way. Light breakers made of rusty wrought iron and laced in an in intricate geometrical web is a prime example of cutting edge re-interpretation of the Nepalese Jaali.

Salty Architects

Salty Architects is a Tel Aviv based studio for Architecture and Object Design co-founded by Architects Hadar Menkes and Motti Rauchwerger whose talents range from performance design to furniture and and arts. Their approach is one which respects the context. What we love about their works and in particular in the interventions in existing structures is their coherence  and creativity. Without compromising the essence of the space. The results are stunning and perfectly balanced with the use of materials and a clever adaptation of vintage furniture pieces.
